   Puppetry Stop Motion

The Tree

This is a puppetry stop motion animation. The puppet used in this animation is the tree. It is made of sponge with a wire framed internal skeleton. It is being coloured with textile paint. The backdrop and props used for the setup are made out of light Crêpe papers. The forest scene is created using colours of light brown, lime green and dark green Crêpe papers. It is a short story about a tree that came to life and out of mischief it wanted to pluck the grass and play. But in the end, it got engulfed by the grasses and perished. Although it is a short film of approximately 30 seconds, it takes a quite some time to shoot many frames of photographs in a sequence for the film. It was a new experience for me and it is interesting too.

   Digital Cut-outs

Lolly Story

In this media, I wrote a poem titled The Lolly Story. It has nine verses. The phrases had words that rhyme. I recited the poem and recorded it and create a film where the objects and characters move as if they were paper cuts from a scrapbook. My inspiration came about while I was in the supermarket where I had cravings for lollipops (lollies). The storyline for the poem is somewhat magical and imaginary. There are different characters and I acted as all of them. It is quite an interesting experience as I learnt how to capture myself in photographs and edit them and put them together in a film.

Treasures

Since young, I’ve always loved watching drama series and movies. Most that I have watched along the years were from Singapore’s production but I also watched overseas productions. Watching dramas and movies have helped me understand Chinese and English languages better. Apart from that, I picked up the Cantonese dialect while watching Hong Kong dramas via TVB channels provided by cable Television from Starhub. Amazingly, I learn the languages faster than reading books. Well, it’s because dramas and movies could explained the meaning of the words in their dialogues as they acted them out. This is the power of dramas and movies-‐ they tell a story through visuals. In short, it is called visual storytelling. In 2012, I’ve made a short film about exploring the precious memory of a grandmother. The film is titled - 针惜珍贵的 is in Cantonese and English subtitles are included.
